On his first night back in Neverland, Killian ends up locking himself in his cabin with as many bottles of rum as he can get hold of. The dull ache somewhere beneath his ribs that had been there since Milah had died in his arms had grown almost overwhelming, but he knew that wasn’t it. It was Neverland and she was welcoming him home.
He’d always believed he no longer remembered his childhood adventures as a Lost Boy, the only things he could remember when pushed being the sensation of flight, raucous laughter with the other boys, and a fairy. His fairy.
When he finally slips into a rum-soaked sleep, he doesn’t know if he’s thankful or angry that his dreams do not feature Milah’s murder. Instead, Neverland welcomes him like a wayward child, and its magic teases out memories long forgotten of the treehouse, of fights with the pirates, of those first days where Tink teaches him how to fly. The fiery little fairy who’d been such a part of his childhood glows brightly in his dark dreams, and he mourns the loss of the friend he’d made in his first days in the jungle without truly knowing he’s doing so, (he’s drank that much of the ship’s rum supply, he spends the next two days fighting off the hangover).
But although he dreams of her, not once does it ever occur to him that worlds away, his fairy still lives, and three centuries from now they will be reunited once more in a world without the familiar hum of magic that sang in their veins…
